Soak lentils in a large pot of water for 12 hours. Drain and refill pot with 7 cups of water and bring to boil. Add lentils, reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from heat, drain and set aside. |

Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Sauté onion and carrots for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic and spices and continue to sauté until vegetables are slightly cooked. |

Add cooked lentils, broth, lemon juice, soy sauce, and pepper, and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes. |
